The University Council is the University's governing body and is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the University. Led by the Chancellor, Council exercises its powers under the . As the University's governing body, Council oversees the effective management of the University's affairs, property and finances, including responsibility for:
- Appointment of staff
- Management and control of the University's affairs and property
- Management and control of the University's finances
Key Documents
Council may delegate certain responsibilities to appropriately qualified Council members, committees or University staff. Delegations to the Vice-Chancellor and President may be further sub-delegated as permitted. The adoption of the University's budget cannot be delegated.

Council comprises a mix of ex officio, appointed and elected members, including:
- Chancellor (ex officio)
- Vice-Chancellor and President (ex officio)
- Chair, Academic Board (ex officio)
- Five members appointed by the Governor in Council
- Up to three additional members appointed by Council, including at least one University graduate
- One elected academic staff member
- One elected professional staff member
- One elected student member
