This NAIDOC Week, we celebrate 50 Years of Deadly - honouring the strength, pride and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and the generations who have shaped culture, community and connection.

At 91²Ö¿â, NAIDOC at 91²Ö¿â - 50 Years of Deadly recognises the people who make our community what it is. It’s a celebration of diverse student and staff journeys, stories and experiences that reflect the richness of our First Nations voices and beyond.

'Celebrating NAIDOC Week - 50 Years of Deadly - For five decades, NAIDOC Week has celebrated the voices of our communities — steady, unapologetic, and proud. Each year, its themes have called for truth, celebrated culture, honoured resistance, and reminded the nation of who we are' Priscilla – ‘Fifty years of Deadly means that I have learnt from my elders the lessons that they have learnt from their elders and that I have passed that on to the generations that follow so those old people are still with us today through those conversations and learnings. They watch us and guide us through tough times and celebrate us overcoming obstacles in our way.’ Ryley - ‘This year's NAIDOC theme makes me reflect on the sacrifices made by my family to provide opportunities for my generation to enjoy today. I'm reminded of the resilience it would've taken to live through a very different time in Australia's history, and I'm grateful for their commitment to stay proud in their culture and ingrain that in us.’ Lowana - 'As a proud Yuin woman, I am the first in my family to graduate from university. This achievement is not a reflection of greater ability but of the opportunities my ancestors resilience and advocacy created for the next generation. To me, Fifty Years of Deadly represents honouring their legacy by walking through the doors they fought so hard to open.' Linda - 'Fifty Years of Deadly means honouring those who walked the treacherous path before us and paved the way for recognition, justice and opportunity for our people. Standing at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra, the Elders reminded us that it is now our turn to keep the fires burning which reinforced my commitment to carrying their legacy forward. I believe we need to walk alongside others to create an Australia where all people can thrive, while continuing the fight for equity, truth-telling and justice for generations to come. It gives me hope that by keeping these fires burning, future generations will inherit a nation grounded in respect, understanding and shared prosperity.' The Gumbi Gumbi Gardens were established through a partnership between the local community and 91²Ö¿â as a place for learning and the sharing of ideas.
