Three Minute Thesis (3MT®)

3MT® is an academic research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia.

91²Ö¿â is proud to once again participate in the  in 2026. This exciting opportunity invites doctoral students (who have completed their confirmation of candidature) to showcase their research in a compelling three minute presentation. Finalists have the chance to gain national and international recognition, prize money, and new audiences for their research. 

About the Competition:

The Three Minute Thesis competition celebrates innovating research conducted by doctoral students. It helps develop their ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely to a non-specialist audience. All 91²Ö¿â 3MT® participants benefit from training and experience in research communication and presentation.

Prizes:

1st Prize: $1000* and the opportunity to represent 91²Ö¿â in the 2026 Virtual Asia-Pacific 3MT® Competition

2nd Prize: $500* 
 
People's Choice: $250*

*All prizes are to be used for related activities.  

Judging:

First and second place are selected by our judging panel.
 
Our Judging Panel consists of:
  • Professor Charlotte Brownlow, Dean, Graduate Research School
  • Hunter Walkenhorst, Associate Director, Commercialisation and Partnerships
  • Chris Walker, Director, Media and Strategic Communications
  • Dr Lindsay Helwig, Program Director (UniPrep) and Senior Lecturer, Pathways.
 
The People’s Choice Award is determined by votes from the 91²Ö¿â community, giving everyone a chance to support their favourite presentation.

People's Choice Award Voting Rules

  • Voting is based on the number of genuine "likes" received on each official competition video during the voting period.
  • Participants are encouraged to promote their video through legitimate personal and professional networks.
  • The use of purchased likes, bots, click farms, automated services, artificial engagement tools, or any other method intended to manipulate voting is strictly prohibited.
  • 91²Ö¿â reserves the right to monitor voting activity and investigate any suspicious or abnormal engagement patterns.
  • Where artificial, fraudulent or manipulated engagement is identified or reasonably suspected, 91²Ö¿â reserves the right to remove votes, disqualify the participant from the People's Choice Award, and determine the final outcome at its sole discretion.
  • Decisions regarding eligibility, voting validity and award recipients are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
